Northern lights tonight in Maine

Northern Maine is the darkest and most magnetically northern ground in the eastern United States: Katahdin Woods and Waters is an International Dark Sky Sanctuary at 56° magnetic latitude, so Kp 5 brings an arc and Kp 6 puts it high. Aroostook County's potato fields give the open northern horizon the forest lacks. Schoodic Point in Acadia is the coastal choice — Atlantic to the north-east, Bar Harbor's small glow to the west — and it is where most of the state's aurora photographs are made. Winter cloud from the Gulf of Maine is the usual reason a good Kp night is lost.
