Northern lights tonight in Norway

Tromsø is the aurora capital because it is under the oval — 67° magnetic latitude, where the green arc is overhead at Kp 1 and a Kp 4 night fills the sky — and because the Gulf Stream keeps the coast at −5 °C instead of −30 °C. The trade is cloud: the coast is wet, and the guides' whole craft is driving to the gap, east to the Finnish border or out to the fjords. Ersfjordbotn is thirty minutes from town with mountains and water; Senja's coast road has the darkest sky reachable in an evening; Lofoten is 270 km to the south-west and no less under the oval. Polar night from late November to mid-January is the best season and the hardest to plan for.
